Nerd Prom '06
Another Nerd Prom come and gone.
'06 was an odd year for the Con, to me it seemed to hit mass saturation. A good thing for the Con itself, a bad thing for trying to walk around the isles and navigate past the throngs of mouth-breathing basement dwellers who surfaced for their annual Superbowl of Geekdom.
I'd heard the final numbers of attendees on Saturday to be somewhere in the 65k plus range...Nerd Prom gets bigger every year, that's a given- but this was the first year that it went from being "under the radar" to BEING the radar.
Consequently, I mostly avoided the "Big Events" of the con...I stuck to the floor and wandered around looking for "the new", while visiting friends here and there...
Here's the photo-recap:

It was very cool meeting Brian- I've been a fan of his work since I was a youngin' and first discovered his "Gnomes" book in the library- I remember thinking "Hey, this looks like the Dark Crystal!", and sure enough there was a very valid reason to think so.
We talked about the sequel for a bit, he said the he felt the story was very close in spirit to the original, and that Genndy was a very capable director for the film...now, they're just waiting on the money.
Joss Whedon and John Cassidy:

Joss. It's all been said...the guy operates at a level of geek brilliance that can't be topped. Charting his progress from Buffy to Firefly, and now to the Wonder Woman film, I've got no problems declaring him our next great geek-leader.
Pictured with him is John Cassidy, one of my current favorite artists- Combine the two of them and you get the best goddamn X-men book I've read in 12 years.
Steranko:

Steranko is truely a legend. He's been an illusionist, an escape artist, a magician, and a musician- that's all before he re-defined what sequental art could do in the mid-60's. Steranko was the guy that brought in surrealism and pop-art.
His 40 year old panels look as fresh today as the man himself...He's 70, and can probably kick my ass.
Blurry Wolverine:

As he heroically dashes away from the Mrs.Field's Cookies booth.
The scary thing is, the dude actually IS blurry.
Spidey!

Y'know, from the wrong angle, it kinda looks like the webbing is coming out of his butt....
Con Floor:

David Mack and Mandy Amano:

David is one of most innovative artists out there- His book Kabuki...well, it makes my head hurt when I read it. In a good way of course.
The artwork there is Death from Sandman...who- looks suspciously like Mandy in this rendering...
Seriously though, Kabuki..It is gorgeous to look at, and is redefining the limitations of the medium- Go check it out.
Hot Fuzz:

Hot Fuzz will be to Cop/Buddy movies what Shawn of the Dead was to Zombie Movies.
CAN'T WAIT.
Matt Wagner:

Matt was kinda busy with sketches, so I didn't really get a chance to talk to him- he was kind enough to look up for a photo though-
Threw in a Sandman piece of Wagner's to go along with the Mack one.
Afro Samurai:

GOTdamn right.
Riddle me this:

The Riddler wears Dockers?!
Nice pants.
Who the hell used up all the aluminum foil:

And all the Sharpie Ink!!!
The Mecha Kitty:

I can kinda see this guy sitting in his apartment looking over his costume in a full length mirror saying: "It's almost there...it just seems to be missing something..."
Then, he glances at the refection of his lonely one bedroom existance in the mirror and sees the stuffed kitty sitting on a papa-san chair...
He knows his costume is complete.
Richard Kelly and Brett Weldele:

I got a chance to hang with Richard (Donnie Darko) Kelly for a bit- we nerded out about Stephen King's Dark Tower series, which- if you ever run into a fellow Tower-junkie, goes on for about as long as two dudes talking about Rush's 2112 album.
Despite the chilly reception it got at Cannes, I'm convinced Southland Tales is going to rock.
Troops:

Is it just me, or is the Stormtrooper in the purple helmet a little on the "swishy" side?
What am I saying? He's wearing a PURPLE HELMET.
Apparently it's "Don't ask, don't tell" in the Empire as well.
Buddy Jesus:

Now that just rules.
PanoRAMO:

Here's a crappy panoramic I took of the floor--
The full "Where's Waldo" sized one can be found here.
HST:

Myths and legends die hard in America. We love them for the extra dimension they provide, the illusion of near-infinite possibility to erase the narrow confines of most men's reality. Weird heroes and mold-breaking champions exist as living proof to those who need it that the tyranny of "the rat race" is not yet final.
-- HUNTER S. THOMPSON, 1937-2005
Mario...and...gang?

Clearly, we have a diffrence in costume budgets here.
The Business End of a Picachu:

I guess a Picachu can't poop.

Spider man, Spider...woman?
...and future virgin.
A Family Affair:

I'm not going to make fun of this. It's really kinda sweet.
The Gang from Lost:

Just Shoot Him:

ELVIS TROOPER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have decided that Elvis Trooper is my personal groundhog. If I attend a con and do not see him, it will be a bad year for geekdom.
Thankfully, we're safe until '07. your cut contents here.
